OCCMED LINK NZ Ltd provides Occupational and Environmental Physician services. Occupational Physicians, because of their training and experience in industry and workplaces, can assist in assessing the relationship of health problems to work, devising management plans, liasing with the work place and facilitating a safe return to work. They perform pre-employment and pre-placement medical assessments, provide independent expert medical advice on all aspects of health and work, on health hazard identification, assessments and management (physical, electrical, chemical, radiation, reproductive hazards) and on compliance with legislation and regulations. They assist management to minimise sickness absence and absenteeism and with training and education of staff. Occupational Physicians plan health promotion and wellness programs and special first aid and emergency response. Last but not least, they investigate the outbreak of illness (such as RSI) and assist in environmental health management. Recent projects: Since working for New Zealand Aluminium Smelters Ltd (NZAS) OCCMED LINK NZ Ltd has been involved in reducing the number of musculo-skeletal injuries, in preparing NZAS for the challenges of its ageing workforce, in updating of pre-employment and health surveillance systems (respiratory health, exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, noise, dermatitis, electromagnetic fields/radiation, thermal stress and vibration), and in the introduction of fitness for work criteria/standards.

Services and Products:
Physical Hazards of the Oil, Gas and Mineral Industry As part of the service provided to NZAS, OCCMED LINK NZ Ltd is involved in hazard management and health surveillance for employees exposed to noise, vibration, dust, silica, heat stress and electricity. Chemical Hazards OCCMED LINK NZ Ltd is also involved in hazard management and health surveillance of fumes/gases (such as carbon monoxide, fluoride and sulphur dioxide), skin irritants (such as heat, dust, oils and solvents), and in the management of occupational health aspects of enclosed spaces work and work at height. Psychosocial Health OCCMED LINK NZ Ltd has experience in the provision of occupational health services to workplaces which - like the oil and gas industry - require around the clock/shift work. Dr Peterson has done training and has experience in workplace drug testing. He has extensive travel experience, speaks several languages and has good multicultural awareness. He is aware of the specific needs of migrant workers. Vehicle and Machinery Accidents Dr. Peterson is accustomed to applying the Australian Fitness for Commercial Driving guidelines as fitness standard for driving commercial working and also for work in safety critical rules. Prior to founding OCCMED LINK NZ Ltd he was used to applying New Zealand and international fitness to fly regulations. Provision of Emergency Medical Care for Remote and Industrial Sites Before founding OCCMED LINK NZ Ltd in 2004 Dr. Peterson worked for the Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF) from 1994 to 2004. In his role as Base Medical Officer at the remote RNZAF Ohakea Base, on national and overseas deployments, and later (from 2002 to 2004) as Director of Air Force Medical Services and Officer Commanding of the Aviation Medicine Unit, Wing Commader Peterson was responsible for providing and organising medical emergency response to remote sites. Dr. Peterson holds the Diploma of Aviation and the Certificate of Aeromedical Evacuation (both of the University of Otago, Dunedin). He has also tow years experience in working in emergency departments in Lower Hutt and in Masterton and one year as rural General Practice trainee in remote locations in Northland. Compensation Claims and Management of Workplace Injuries Dr. Peterson has worked for the New Zealand Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC) as Branch Medical Adviser for one year. He is also a Certified Independent Medical Examiner (CIME) of the American Board of Independent Medical Examiners (ABIME). Last but not least, Dr. Peterson advises NZAS about claims management and compensation decisions. Safety: As part of the contractual agreement with NZAS, OCCMED LINK NZ Ltd has to adhere to and comply with the Rio Tinto safety systems and with injury recording procedures (which are based on NIOSH definitions for the classification of lost time injuries etc.). NZAS personnel are trained in doing "STOP" safety observations and in applying "Take Fives" regularly. At present they are being trained in "ZIP" (zero incident process).

F494 The MOPS program of the Australasian Faculty of Occupational Medicine meets the requirements of the Medical Council of New Zealand for annual recertification as specialist in Occupational and Environmental Medicine. Dr. Peterson also holds a PhD in occupational rehabilitation and the Diploma of Aviation Medicine and Certificate of Aeromedical Evacuation of the University of Otago. He is a Certified Independent Medical Examiner of the American Board of Independent Medical Examiners. Dr. Peterson regularly attends national and international medical conferences and courses to update his skills and for continuous medical education purposes.
